Glenn H. Janssen, 90, of Arlington, Iowa, died on Friday morning, July 23, 2021, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Funeral Service were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the Community Bible Church in Strawberry Point, Iowa with Pastor Bruce Klett officiating.

Visitation was 4-8 p.m.. Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment:  Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington, Iowa with military honors.

Memorials may be directed to the Arlington Ambulance Service and Fayette County Historical Society.

Joyce McFarlane

Joyce Ann McFarlane 64, of Randalia, IA, passed away on July 21, 2021 with her loving family at her side. Joyce was born in Dubuque, IA on October 6, 1956 to Earl Joseph Streif and Leona Catherine (Fah) Streif. Joyce graduated from West Union High School in 1975.

Joyce was united in marriage to Robert McFarlane on November 24, 1979; they were married 42 years.  To this union brought four wonderful children, Melissa, Matthew, Monica, and Megan.

David M. Johnson, Jr., 62, of Fayette, died unexpectedly, Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. at Klocks Island Park in Fayette. Visitation preceded the service on Thursday starting at 5:00 p.m. Becker & Son Funeral Home in Fayette is assisting David’s family. Online condolences may be left at www.beckermilnesrettig.com.

David Manuel, Jr., son of David Manuel, Sr. and Mary (Mansell) Johnson was born December 1, 1958, at the hospital in Lexington, Missouri. He received his education in the Napoleon-Wellington R-9 Schools. 

Following his education, he served in the Missouri National Guard. Duke worked as a welder for many years in Missouri, prior to working at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, which he retired from in 2015.

Karolin (Falb) Lehman passed away peacefully at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital, West Union on July 19, 2021 at the age of 89. She was born June 15, 1932 to George and Myrtle (Kerr) Falb at the family home on Pleasant Street in Elgin, IA. 

Karolin attended Elgin Public School graduating with the class of 1949. Following graduation she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. She began her teaching career in first grade in Tripoli, IA.

A former West Union resident Edward A. Havens, 78, died May 10th, 2021, in his home in Scottsdale, AZ.

Mr. Havens was born August 12th, 1942, in Hannibal, MO., to Glenn M. Havens and Pauline A. Miller Havens.

He lived a ‘true love and basketball’ life. As a young boy, he scrambled around the same tunnels that Mark Twain famously wrote about. He grew up in Galesburg, IL, where he excelled in sports. He was a member of the Hall of Fame inducted 1959 Silver Streaks Illinois State tournament basketball team and a starter on the 1960 state team.

LaVerne Koester

 

Our beloved mother, LaVerne June Koester, went home to heaven to be with God on July 15, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

LaVerne was born July 8, 1934, in Waukon, Iowa, to August and Martha Snitker. She was the youngest of eight children. LaVerne lived on the farm with her parents and siblings. She graduated from high school and went on to work in Cedar Rapids as a secretary for 3 years. 

She met her husband Donald at Matter’s at the Ballroom in Decorah, Iowa, and they were married August 19, 1956. LaVerne dedicated her life to being on the farm with Donald and their four children: Connie, Larry, Cheryl and Brad.

When the children were grown, she also worked at Gundersen Palmer Hospital in the dietary department where she made many friends and enjoyed the people she worked with very much.

Elias Zweisamer

Elias Zweibahmer

 

Elias Zweibahmer, age 99, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at Accura Healthcare in Cresco, Iowa.

Elias Arnold Zweibahmer was born at home on July 6, 1922 to Clem J and Walburga (Huinker) Zweibahmer in rural Calmar.  He attended St. Aloysius School in Calmar through the eighth grade.  In later years, he worked as a hired hand for many families in the area.  During that time he met the love of his life, Dorothy Rothmeyer.  

He was drafted into the United States Army in 1944.  He trained as an infantry soldier, and soon found himself in the jungles of the Philippines, carrying a rocket launcher, known as a bazooka.  He was discharged in 1946 and returned to the Ossian area.

James E. Baker, 80, of West Union passed away Friday, July 9, 2021 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.  James Elwyn, the son of Howard and Eva (Reed) Baker, was born April 16, 1941 in Indianola, Iowa.  He was baptized in the Christian Church in Perry, Iowa. James graduated from Perry High School in 1959. James was united in marriage with Geraldine Williams in June of 1969. To this union, one daughter was born. James and Geraldine later divorced.

     Throughout his life, James worked for Iowa Turkey Products in Postville, Iowa; Sawyer Tie Lumber Company in Monona, Iowa; Spectrum Industries in Decorah, Iowa; and he was an half owner of a can redemption center in Decorah before his retirement in 2001.

Gene Olson

Gene Olson

 

Gene Richard Olson, 75, of Camanche, Iowa passed away, Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Big Meadows Nursing Home Savanna, Illinois, after a long fight with Parkinson's. 

A Celebration of Gene's life was held Saturday, July 10, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Camanche where he was a member. A Private Burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory assisted in the burial.

Gene’s Sisters Grace Swenson and Carolyn Smith were presented with the American flag from the American Legion to fly in memory of Gene.

Gene Richard Olson was born to Richard and Evelyn (Dugstad) Olson in Clermont, IA on April 7, 1946. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1964 he graduated from Valley High School, Elgin. Following high school, he joined the coast guard in Duluth, MN and Bayfield, WI from 1964 to 1968. 

Gene married Judy Shirley and later divorced.

Karolin (Falb) Lehman, 89, of West Union passed away Monday, July 19, 2021 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union. Grau Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Elgin, Iowa are assisting the family with arrangements.
