Ty Schmidt, 54, of Janesville, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 26, 2021. Funeral Service were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington, with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Visitation was from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Arlington and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Military Honors by the U.S. Army Honor Guard were conducted following the funeral service.

Tyrone Karl Schmidt was born August 4, 1967, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of Duane Alfred & Arla Mae (Stegen) Schmidt.  Ty was raised in Arlington.  As a young boy he was an active member of 4-H winning ribbons and trophies for raising the best sheep, and enjoyed farming, running tractors and hanging out with his friends snowmobiling and other various activities. 

Tyrone graduated from Starmont High School in the class of 1985, where he also played football.  He continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls until joining the U. S. Army in 1986.  Ty served in the Army and the Reserve for 20 years where he earned commendations as an expert marksman, sharp-shooter, supply and Master Sergeant.  In August of 2010, he was deployed to Afghanistan as the second in command to the 334th BSB Troup until February of 2011.  Ty retired from the Army in 2014.  As well as being an active service member, Ty was also a supervisor of locomotive engineers for the Canadian National Railway for many years before his deployment in 2010.

Ty married Audra Sink in 1993 and five children were born to this union, Chelsea, Rory, Logan, Kiersten and Erika.  Ty and Audra later divorced.  Ty married Sylvia Joi McNeal on June 20, 2005, in Toledo, Ohio.  They made their home in Janesville, where Ty enjoyed farming, gardening, spending time with his wife, kids and friends, grilling out, traveling and playing war games on his laptop.

Ty received his sacraments at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington and more recently had attended Hope City Church in Waterloo.  He had been a volunteer at the Waterloo Food Bank and for Team Rubicon Disaster Response with former members of the military.  In Ghana, he was an active volunteer with malaria testing, agricultural work and a clean water project.

Ty is survived by his Wife: Sylvia Schmidt of Janesville; 7 Children:  Austin Rosendahl of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Erica Rosendahl of Minneapolis, Minnesota,  Chelsea Schmidt (fiancé: Emin) of France, Rory Schmidt of Cedar Falls, Logan Schmidt (fiancé:  Allyson) of Omaha, Nebraska, Kiersten Schmidt of Moline, Illinois & Erika Schmidt of Cedar Falls; Sister: Valerie (Doug) Brooks of Des Moines; Niece & Nephew:  Maggie & Jack Brooks; and Many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends.

Ty was preceded in death by his parents: Duane & Arla Schmidt
