When the 2017-2018 school year begins Thursday, Aug. 24, there will be a new teacher in the preschool classroom at South Winneshiek. Gretchen Wenthold, a native of Fort Atkinson and graduate of Turkey Valley High School, is excited about the new opportunity.

“Joining the preschool program at South Winn and meeting the kids and their families is what I am most looking forward to,” said Wenthold. “It will also be great to be able to work so close to home!”

Wenthold’s goal of becoming a teacher is one that she set very early in her life, as she knew from early on that she wanted to be an educator.

“When I was growing up, I enjoyed playing school with my sisters,” she elaborated. “I have also always enjoyed working with kids.”

The new Warrior preschool instructor received her education from the University of Northern Iowa and began her professional career at DeSales School in Ossian.

After a year, Wenthold went to the New Hampton school district, where she continued to teach preschool for four years.

When not in the classroom, the family-oriented Wenthold stated that she enjoys going for walks and being outdoors with her husband, Mike, and 1-year-old daughter, Emerseyn.

As Gretchen is set to begin her sixth year in teaching, she will join her husband, Mike, on the South Winneshiek staff. He has been teaching at South Winneshiek since the 2014-2015 school year.
